Newcastle Eagles v Caledonia Pride

Sunday 5th January, 4:00pm tip

Eagles Community Arena

Pride travel to the North East in the second of their WBBL double-header this weekend, facing Newcastle Eagles at the Eagles Community Arena.

This is the second meeting between the two sides this season after Eagles picked up a 73-48 win in the WBBL Trophy back in September.

Eagles come into the game off the back of a 58-63 loss v Sevenoak Suns in the Semi-Final of the WBBL Cup yesterday afternoon.

In the Championship, Eagles sit third with an impressive record of 6-1 from their opening seven fixtures. An opening weekend loss to Sevenoaks Suns is the only blemish on their record, which includes victories over Durham, Manchester and Sheffield.

Lithuanian international Mante Kvederaviciute leads the way for Eagles in terms of PPG this season, with an average of 18.1 after seven games. Australian Georgia Ohrdorf boasts an average double-double, starting the WBBL campaign with 18 ppg and 13.1 rpg.

Jenni Torrance is the only absentee from the squad ahead of the game.

Head Coach Bart Sengers is aware of the threat the Newcastle side poses:

“Newcastle Eagles will be focused on their semi-final for the cup against Sevenoakes which they play on Saturday and to be honest they can afford to focus on that game solely. They are very talented and not many teams have been able to stop their offense yet. They have been giving teams problems with their pick and rolls and outstanding play making. Our goal will once again be to limit their points in transition and give all we got when it comes to rebounding. We focus on our own team and make sure we improve every game. We will however need to find a solution for their 6’6 post and how they use her in the pick and rolls. I think it will be a great weekend for us. Playing 2 teams of such high caliber offers us so many learning experiences and we find out how we deal with tough back to back games.”

For those not heading to Newcastle, updates will be provided via Pride’s Twitter as well as the usual live stats, which are available here.
